GEO for CPA and accounting firms
GEO for accounting firms,
explained with data
GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of getting a business named and cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. For an accounting firm it comes down to three things: AI crawlers can read your website, the sources the assistants cite say the same about you, and you count how often you are named. What each one means in practice, with our own data from 200 CPA firm websites.

Where the term GEO comes from
The term comes from a research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors, first published on November 16, 2023 and accepted at KDD 2024. They reported that GEO can boost a source’s visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, and that what works differs from one domain to the next. AEO (answer engine optimization), AI SEO, LLM SEO, ChatGPT SEO and AI search optimization are other names for the same goal. For an accounting firm the question behind all of them is simple: when a business owner asks an assistant for an accountant in their city, does it name you?
What the assistants read for accounting questions
In our check on October 13, 2026, Google’s AI Overviews for “best CPA firm” and “best accountant for small business” in 20 US cities cited Yelp’s search page for the city in 15 of the 25 answers with sources and Google’s business listings in 10. BrightLocal found Yelp in 80% of local ChatGPT answers across 60,970 checks, and Apple’s business listing among ChatGPT’s top sources, while Google Business Profile led for Google’s own AI. In a UK test on August 14, 2026, ChatGPT cited one curated “top 3 in your city” directory in five of six cities. So for a CPA firm, GEO starts with the short list of profiles and lists the assistants actually read.
What our check of 200 CPA firm websites found
In robots.txt, none of the 184 sites we could reach blocked OAI-SearchBot or ChatGPT-User, the crawlers ChatGPT uses to search and to open pages. 24 (13%) blocked PerplexityBot, all of them on the same website platform for accounting firms, which lists the crawlers it allows and blocks the rest. 3 home pages showed their text only through JavaScript, which many AI crawlers do not run, and 65 (35%) had no structured data that names the firm. A day later, our check of 197 real estate agent websites showed a different pattern: almost no robots.txt blocks, but one in eight sites turned away a request without JavaScript.
Pages for each service and city
Two accounting firms that publish one page per city showed up as sources in Google’s AI answers in 6 and 4 different cities in our check. A page that says in plain sentences which service you offer in which city, for which kind of client and with which credentials gives an assistant something it can quote when that exact question comes up.
Reviews decide the broad questions
Google’s AI named 17 firms with a rating and a review count in our check. Their median was 85 reviews at 4.9 stars, against a median of 30 reviews across all 200 firms in our sample. In the UK test, every firm whose rating was quoted had 4.5 stars or more. Fake reviews are illegal in the US, and review platforms filter suspicious ones out anyway, so the work here is asking real clients, every month.
How to measure GEO
One screenshot proves nothing: in a study of 2,961 prompts, the same list of brands came back less than 1% of the time when a question was repeated. Measure with a fixed set of questions your clients ask, run each one several times on each assistant, and count how often you are named. Narrow questions, such as “CPA for dental practices in [city]”, move first. In one documented test, a new page on an established domain was cited by ChatGPT search 48 hours later. Broad questions such as “best CPA in [city]” depend on reviews and third-party lists and take weeks to months.
How to choose a GEO provider
Ask six questions. Do you measure before and after, across repeated runs and several assistants, and will I see the raw answers? Which sources do the assistants cite for my questions, and is your work aimed at those? Do you check crawler access, JavaScript and the firewall on my website? Who owns the pages and profiles if I stop? Is the price fixed or hourly? And walk away from anyone who guarantees a top spot or offers reviews, rankings or listings that are not earned: nobody controls what an assistant says.
Who offers GEO for accounting firms
SEO agencies, marketing agencies that work with accounting firms and independent specialists offer it under all of the names above. createwithlogic does it done-for-you for US accounting, CPA and tax firms: a free check, then an AI visibility audit at $490 (20 client questions run three times each on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, credited in full toward the work), then ongoing work from $990 per month, cancel any month. The work follows the steps on this page and is measured with the same questions every month.
Common questions, answered straight
What is GEO for CPA firms?
GEO, generative engine optimization, is the work of getting a CPA firm named and cited when clients ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI for an accountant. It covers whether AI crawlers can read the firm’s website, whether the profiles and lists the assistants cite are complete and consistent, and a count of how often the firm is named across repeated questions.
Is GEO different from SEO for an accounting firm?
They overlap: a readable website with clear service and city pages helps both. The difference is the target. SEO aims at a position in Google’s list of links. GEO aims at being named in an answer, and the answers lean on profiles and lists: in our check, Google’s AI cited Yelp’s search page for the city in 15 of 25 answers about accountants.
Who offers GEO for accounting firms in the US?
SEO and marketing agencies that work with accounting firms and independent AI visibility specialists. createwithlogic offers it done-for-you for US accounting, CPA and tax firms, starting with a free check and a $490 AI visibility audit that is credited in full toward the work.
How long does GEO take for a CPA firm?
Narrow questions about one service in one city move first; in one documented test a new page was cited by ChatGPT search 48 hours after publishing. Broad questions such as “best CPA in [city]” depend on reviews and third-party lists and take weeks to months. Counting the same questions every month shows which is happening.
Does blocking GPTBot hurt GEO?
No. GPTBot collects data for training OpenAI’s models. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User opens the pages a user asks about. If your robots.txt allows those two, ChatGPT can read your site.
